FISTERIES.

The wholesale fish marketing scheme has got away

to a very good start in spite of the uphill struggle in the first

couple of weeks. The value of fish handled is as follows:-

Fresh Fish

Salted Fish

$104,000.-

The gross commission earned from the 5th.Oct. to 30th Oct.

amounts to 61,000.-, whilst expenses for the sume period are

estimated at $22,000.-

a. Comments. The considerable excess of Salted Fish over Fresa Fish

chief ly

is attributblack of ice, resulting in the fishermen having

to salt a larger proportion of their catches than would otherwise

have been the case, whilst a small contributory cause is said to

be the smuggling to the black market.

b.Supply of Fresh Fond Fish, has been disappointing, but this will

improve in due course. Black market operators received a warning last week when two wholsesale vendors were convicted and fined.

c. Prices. One of the objects of the Fisheries Scheme is to bring

prices down and statistics show that wholesale prices of Salted Fish have fallen by about 22% during October.

Fresh Fish prices have been eratic, due in part to the poor.
